In addition to the obvious, selecting the best network technology for a particular application also requires consideration of cost of installation, cost of operation, available power, physical barriers, and security requirements. Through diversity and creativity, we chose the best networking technology for any situation. This has sometimes led us to surprising decisions, including the use of power line networking running the HomePlug standard.
Case study – Industrial Controller
A customer with a controller device located in apartment buildings and dormitories needed to connect their devices to each other and to the Internet. The need was for diversity depending on available resources at each location. The solution ended up using Ethernet, AC power line communications, and the Verizon wireless network.
